climbers missing on Ben Nevis
« on: 21:37:26, 16/02/16 »
Two climbers are missing on the Ben. They were camping next to the CIC hut in the north side of the mountain.  MRT request anyone knowing the area of the Ben or the climbing route they intended taking to contact them. Posting this just in case anyone from the forum was up that way.
More details can be found on the BBC web site.

I cannot imagine what conditions must be like on or near the summit.
It was bitterly cold when i made my successful attempt last October, but then the weather was perfect, high cloud, gorgeous sunshine, and not a single patch of snow.

When the Mountain Rescue call off the search, it either means the weather is so poor that a search is futile, or the chances of finding them alive is poor.

It was because of poor weather the search was stood down. Two MRT members were caught in a small avalanche on Monday. Fortunately no injuries. They will resume the search today.

The three guys have now been found. Hoping for a similar outcome for the other two

Unfortunately one of the three Southern Uplands walkers has died.  I saw the helicopter earlier bringing them in to the infirmary.

More bad news - a second of the three men found in the Lowthers has died.  A really tragic week in Scotland.  The Southern Uplands is in my neck of the woods, and considering the blizzard overnight on Tuesday it must have been horrific spending the night in the open.

How easy it can all go wrong

Yes, very sad news............a climber also died in an avalanche on Creag Meagaidh yesterday. His climbing partner survived but was seriously injured. This mountain is to the east of the Ban Nevis massif and is very popular with climbers.

Very sad news.

Whilst I know nothing of the circumstances, it does still remind us all that things can go wrong for whatever reason :-\
