transport query
« on: 20:51:17, 08/05/16 »
I'm from Northern Ireland and am planning to visit the Dales in the autumn. Can I ask - is it possible to get to the national park using trains or buses from Leeds Bradford airport? Which towns or villages provide accommodation? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Henry

Short answer is Yes. Northern Rail is the rail company that serves the Yorkshire area, including the Yorkshire Dales National Park bits from Skipton northwards and Dales Bus has all the info on buses (and links for trains too) serving the Dales. See http://dalesbus.org

From the airport Flying Tiger buses will take you into Leeds and Bradford for onward connections, see http://www.flyingtigerbus.co.uk

Lots of places for accommodation but that will, of course, depend on where you wish to visit. Skipton is a large town and has supermarkets, shops, cafes, restaurants and with bus and rail links to virtually all of the Dales 'hotspots'. If you prefer something smaller and quieter, then Settle (I may be biased here) also has a supermarket, shops, cafes and restaurants and is handy for the 3 Peaks and Malham, and Grassington (shop, cafes, restaurants) handy for Warfedale, may be suitable. Lots of smaller towns, villages close to rail and bus links should you want quieter still, but with less facilities.

If you have a plan of where you are going to walk and what you need re accommodation, food etc., that may help in being able to offer more specific advice.

One F IS the expert with public transport. (Though why he's a Jr member I don't know :) )
We actually have a very good train service to Settle and beyond. You can use trains to tackle all 3 of the famous peaks. Stations are at the start of them all.
Buses are IMO a little more restrictive from Settle.
Plenty of accommodation.

Thanks very much for these responses, I'm really at the beginning of the planning stage. What are the 'Dales hotspots'?/ classic views? When it is cloudy I opt for a lower level walk and in good weather tackle a higher peak. I'm really only limited by public transport connections. The only criteria I have when walking is to reach a vantage point. Would Malhamcove be popular? Thanks, Henry

Malham Cove is certainly popular but well worth a visit particularly if you go to Gordale Scar as well.  You can walk over the fell from Settle or up the valley from Gargrave both of which are accessible by train.  There are also good walks in to that area from Wharfedale, which I think still has buses from Skipton, but lots of people on this forum will know more about the current situation than I do.

Hi Henryb,

I rely on public transportation too.  Wharfedale probably has the most regular service that I've encountered.  I enjoyed the area so much on the Dales Way, that I rented a cottage the next autumn and did day walks out of Starbotton.  If I wanted to walk for groceries, I could just toddle down to Kettlewell's shop or hop on the bus to Grassington.  There's even a B & B at Buckden that offers a discount to people relying on public transit: http://http://www.westwindsinyorkshire.co.uk/specialoffers.asp  Haven't stayed there, though.

The Malham area took just a bit more planning since the bus service didn't seem quite as regular.

I'm in the same boat as you are, planning buses for places further north like Swaledale or Wensleydale, but so far, it looks like they have good routes too.  That's probably getting a bit far from Leeds, though.  Just in case, http://http://www.littlewhitebus.co.uk/timetables.php

Good luck. I'll  be taking notes on this thread too :)
