After a lovely walk doing the Pen y Fan horseshoe yesterday (TR here
http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=32931.0) there was a swift decline in our numbers for the todays walk. Alewife woke with a nasty chesty cough, so decided that another walk wasn’t advisable, so she and her French friends bailed out, leaving Glyders, nod2 and myself to tackle the waterfall walk from Pont nedd Fechan.
Arriving at the car park at Craig y Ddinas, a popular climbing spot, the clouds decided to dump some rain on us so it was on with the waterproofs and then a short walk back into the village to start the walk along Nedd Fechan. The rain would be on and off throughout our walk, so there were numerous stops to either take off or put on the relevant rain gear!! The route from the village is well defined and took us to the first of many waterfalls, Sgwd Gwladus
Having been there before I suggested to the others that they climb up onto the limestone shelf that creates the waterfall, so I could take their picture, but perhaps should have zoomed in more, but you may just be able to make them out
We then continued up past various other falls, including this one here
until we were arrived at the car park at Pont Melin-fach. We then needed to head East, following a mixture of roads and tracks, to reach the bridge across the Afon Melte just above the falls at Sgwd Clun-Gwyn. From here we had intended to follow a route provided by phil1960, but the rocks were slippery with the rain so we played safe and simply followed the path around to Sgwd yr Eira. Often referred to as the ‘waterfall of snow’, rather fitting given the way the water tumbles down
The path at this point continues behind the waterfall, not something that you do on most walks, and then continues through forested areas back to the car park. Or at least it did. There’s been significant felling along this part of the route, apparently with the intention of restoring the area to a more original look, and the scent of pine hung heavily in the air.
Back at the car park we all agreed it had been a cracking walk, and a fitting end to a wonderful weekend, so thanks again to Alewife for putting it all together.
(nod2 and Glyders took many more photos so more may follow this brief report)
