Percy,

I received an email earlier alerting me to this and I’m absolutely appalled you’d go to these lengths to go against what I wanted. I didn’t lose the website, I took the difficult decision to remove it. If I’d wanted people to continue to access it I’d have left it alone.

The decision I took at the weekend was by no means an easy one and I had a very good reason for removing the current content. The reason was, because I didn’t want the website to die the slow death of no updates as other websites out there are doing. Rightly or wrongly that was what I felt so I’d like to ask you to respect my wishes and end what you’re doing now.

After all the compliments & nice things people have said about me on here I’m saddened that I’m now coming across in a bad light because of what I’ve been forced to post.

The irony is; I was beginning to regret what I did but now I know it was the right decision.

I'm sorry you feel that way but should point out that I haven't gone to any lengths to go against your wishes. I explicitly said here, and in the email I sent, that I didn't know if you wanted the content to remain online and, further, that I would do nothing without your permission.

In addition you should know that google store copies of pretty much everything on the web - neither of us have any control over that so you should be aware that your site still exists should anyone want it.

I feel that you owe me an apology.

This is exactly why I don’t use any form of social media / forums etc (apart from on here at the moment).

OK, I saw red and typed the post in anger so sorry for that.  However, you must have realised I wanted to take the website offline otherwise I wouldn’t have removed it.

I work in IT and am fully aware that google stores everything. I knew people out there would try to access the website via the back door but never expected to hear about it actually happening. To read people complimenting me on one hand and then showing other folk how to access the pages they knew I’d deleted was to an extent going against my wishes.

There’s no way I’m getting into an online argument so yes, I’ve said sorry and am now saying politely that I do want the website to remain offline and would appreciate it if you didn’t go down the route you mention to grab the content automatically.

I never saw an email you sent, I assume you meant sent to me but could be wrong.

I didn't have an email address for you so someone here suggested I try to contact you via Paul Sharkey. I was basically asking if you wanted the content removed or not and now I have my answer so you can consider this the end of the matter. You have to realise there was no way for us to know if you'd removed everything because you wanted it gone or that it was simply too much trouble to keep it up, the message at your domain is not crystal clear about that.

I think it's a real shame such a great resource has gone but if that's what you want that is your prerogative.

I hope David doesn't mind me posting this: we have talked privately and sorted out our crossed wires so are both happy hikers again.  O0

David you will never come across in a bad light as far as I'm concerned. Your site has been an absolute joy to look at and provided so much entertainment and information over the years and we all owe you a huge debt. We are just sad and are mourning its loss but I'm sure everyone will respect your decision to remove it. It is your website to do what you want with after all. Thank you again and I wish you all the best and I do hope to meet you on the fells to say hello  :)

I can only echo what others have said about the site and I'm gutted that it's gone, I have always looked on the site for ideas for walks when I've been planning a trip to the lakes and always been grateful for David's knowledge about the Lake District and the detail that he puts into every walk.

It can't be easy updating a website every time you do a walk, especially if you've done that walk many times before and trying to write different thing with different photos but his enthusiasm always shone through.

On a personal level, I'm gutted to see the site go if that's what you choose to do but I hope you reconsider, not only is the site essential reading but it would also be a shame just to delete something that's been part of your life for many many years, what a waste.

It's your website though and I respect your decision, thank you for the many walks and ideas that you've given me since my first visit to the Lakes a few years ago.

No idea whats gone on with the site concerned, but his comment about slow death hit home seeing as that's whats happening here. New members keep joining, but its still very quiet here.
Are folks not walking anymore?
The irony is I am just plotting to make a break for it to Wharfedale tomorrow, as the weather looks grand :)

I was going to e-mail   David, as I think I have the address somewhere, but I expect he’s been bombarded and didn’t want to add myself to the list, so I decided to register on this site and hopefully he will see this.
David I would like to thank you for the years your website has inspired a number of family walks and given me   a window on my favourite part of the world when I can’t get up there.    To my mind it was one of the best if not  the best of its kind.    Your photos were glorious, you comments quite often raised a laugh and you aren’t the sort of walker who thinks only the high fells are worth the effort.    As a small family party of mixed abilities your lower level walks helped us to find suitable walks for us all and all of this you did gratis.    I do hope that if a time comes when the technical problems you recently experienced can be resolved you may consider resurrecting the site or creating something similar.    In the meantime happy walking and perhaps we may meet out there sometime, if I recognise you; just know that 'walk the fells' will be sadly missed.

David,

I too would like to add my thanks for providing the Wikipedia of Wainwright walks for many many people. It was always our go to site when planning our walks.

Mark.

I often wonder why, with Open Street Map for maps, and Wikipedia for encyclopedic information, that there isn't the same for more specialised areas, like fell walking for instance.
Even if it's threads on here, or a shared wordpress blog, or a communal CMS website - Something you can backup the database, or the site. It's stops a wealth of data disappearing at someones whim, plus you get more people's perspective and probably better information.
How you'd do it though, is something I've never looked into.
I'd never came across this site. for me I just google "walks to lords seat and barf" and see what comes up, check a few, and make a GPX file

Oh dear, I'm away/off-line for a few days and just look whats happened.
It was reading David Hall's web-site that brought me around to finding this site, so I have him to thank for not only hours of joy reading his trip reports and viewing his wonderful photos but (indirectly) all the pleasure I derive from now being on here.

These are indeed bad times !

Thanks must go to David for all his tireless work in putting together the Walkthefells web-site over recent years - and for all the pleasure it has given to so many folk, more than perhaps he ever realised. Thanks David.

Just in case David Hall is still reading here … as a resident of Suffolk (lovely in its own way) I would just like to say thank you so much for all the enjoyment you have given over the years. We get up to the Lakes every summer, and many of the routes we have walked have been planned with the help of the site.  But more than that, for the intervening 11 months of the year I have spent many a lunch hour in my office following your adventures on the fells, and it has brought me huge interest and pleasure to see and learn about places old and new. As the last poster said, more than you probably realise!
Thank you.
