LEJoG
« on: 11:12:10, 04/03/17 »
I am going to complete LEJoG in May that I have been doing in stages.  I have two questions:-

Has anyone gone over to the Orkney Islands on their one day escorted day trip from JoG.  It looks worthwhile as I don't expect that I will be that way again and I can sit down for a while on the ferry and the coach! (Just looked at TripAdvisor and it looks worthwhile)

Secondly getting back from JoG to Wick.  The bus service will not get me to Wick in the morning in time to catch the train I need if I stay in JoG overnight.  So I guess that I will need to either get a taxi (expensive)or hitch a lift to Wick and stay there overnight, I can then catch the early train home.  Has anyone had experience of hitching from JoG?  I presume that more people would stop for an old guy with a rucksack but in these times perhaps not.

Hi Harland,
I came across a guy on the A6 who was looking a bit lost, last week. I was in my works van and asked him if he needed any help, as my suspicion was that he was yet another end to ender. I sometimes see them either on foot or cycle along the A49 which runs through our village, but this guy had that look about him, rucksack and all.
He told that he was indeed as I suspected and had started at John O Groats. He had only 30 days in which to complete it. I mentioned that, that was a tall order, but he was confident that he would make it.
he didn't have a definite route plan and was making it up as he went along. he had an outline of a route but told me that with time constraints he had, had to modify it somewhat. He was trying to remain off road, but like that day had taken to the tarmac to straighten out some loops.
There are a number of LDP's that I want to do, and as of the end of the year I should be able to take more time off work, so am at the moment considering an end to end taking in some of them.
This may mean a rather longer than some routes.
I have already done Offas Dyke and the Pennine way and West Highland Way.
What I am thinking at the moment is to link onto the PW later on, maybe at Horton in Ribblesdale after following the Ribble Way, or maybe Gargrave after following the Leeds/Liverpool canal as it goes by near to our house.
PW to Kirk Yetholm, then the Scotland Way which incorporated the Cape Wrath Trail.
Of course from there it would be along the top to John O Groats.
Have to see, wouldn't want to go beyond 6 weeks, but may not be possible within that time.
