Newbie from darkest Thanet.
« on: 18:53:55, 26/06/17 »
Hi everyone, new to the forum So I thought I  best introduce my self.
My name is Dave and at the moment  I live in Thanet, Kent. Which unfortunately is light years away from decent walking locations I prefer open spaces ( don't we all ), wilder the better.
Have not done any serious walking since I  left the Army  because of  work and family commitments ( wife wanted kids I wanted a dog guess who won. I get a dog soon )
Any way, time to get walking, to kick off with I intend to walk the South downs way in September  then off to Dartmoor, ( trip down memory lane ).
Be grateful for any advise regarding the SDW.
Thanks in advance  O0

Welcome from the Sussex coast    :)    I often walk sections of the SDW as day walks. The stretch I'm familiar with is Bignor Hill to Eastbourne.  Which direction are you going to be walking?

Hi Dovegirl
Thanks for the welcome :)
I intend to walk the South downs way West to East, hope to complete the walk in 5/6 days,  I would like to wild camp a few nights as its something I have never done though I intend to stop over at a CAMPSITE to use the facilities.  My main concern is water, understand there are taps dotted around, are there any water taps between Bignor Hill and Eastbourne that are  working  :)
Many thanks

Here's a link to a thread about water taps on the SDW

I never use the taps as I only do day walks but I've seen people using the one outside Southease Church. Sorry but I don't know if the others are working. Some may be turned off in the winter so you should be OK in September.  Pyecombe Church has a kitchen that visitors are welcome to use.

Hi S & B and welcome from the Peak District O0

Maybe send 'bricam2096' a message. He's recently walked the SDW and may be able to give you some info/advice.

 Hi Sunnydale,
Thanks for the welcome and the link,
Yep got in touch with Bricam and he confirmed that there are still some taps along the SDW, all the other places i have looked are years out of date and with remarks like "tap broken for over a year". Working taps are important as I intend to do a bit of wild camping. Love to walk around you neck of the woods, perhaps next year.

Thanks for you help much appreciated
