Boot Advice
« on: 12:32:59, 23/07/17 »

Good day all

Having had some cracking replies to a recent post concerning a Snowdonia walk I thought I'd ask some advice on boots as I've been away from walking for a couple of years.
I have had a pair of Scarpa in the past and found them too narrow and I then moved to a pair of Raichle Mount Trail GTX leather boots, when these were in need of replacing I bought some Mammut Mountain Trail ones that were apparently the new version of the Raichle ones. Both boots were spot on. I'm now faced with having to purchase a new pair and am considering the new Mammut Trovat Guide High as I believe they are new upgrade?
If anyone has these boots or if anyone can offer an alternative to look at I'd be grateful.

Must be leather boots and not the material ones.
Preferably have a rand around them to avoid scuffs etc
Must be Gore Tex

Then look at the Alt-Berg Tethera or fremington. Leather boots and come in different width sizes.
Kinkyboots on here probably give you the more detailed low down.
I bought a set of Tethera's and they are a cracking boot!

Unless your walking involves regular winter walking with flexible crampons the Mammut Trovat Guide High GTX being more of a 3-4 Season boot (B1 rated suitable for C1 crampons) are probably a bit overkill for all but the very roughest, steepest and highest terrain in the UK and due to the stiffness of the sole will probably not be particularly comfortable over longer distances.

Have a look at Alt-Berg's range of boots. You can find your nearest Alt-Berg retailer here http://www.altberg.co.uk/stockists/
The Premier retailers (the one's marked in red) are where they will have the widest range available. There are are occasional bargains to be had online but make sure that you get properly measured and try them on before you decide to buy.

The Tethera and Nordkapp are ideal for 3 season use in the UK and are highly regarded amongst many forum members. Numerous posters have reported using the Tethera with flexible crampons for short periods without any problems or issues. All Alt-Berg's range of boots can all be resoled as and when the need arises.
