Yeah, bit of an odd subject - but having got back from a nice Wild camp om Bleaklow to test out a replacement bivvy tent its rather surprised e that my best nights sleep in a tent has been spent on bare, sandy ground. Moorland grass to me is too lumpy bumpy and in sheep grazed areas can be prone to ticks, grass is nice but can be quite wet and proper beach sand is fun but in a wind its hisses against the tet fabric and keeps me awake.

Instead I pitched on an area at the foot of a gritstone outcrop close to Bleaklow head where I can test out sleeping in a strong, cool breeze on quite compact, sandy ground and because its so even its was really comfy under my mat

Any dos and don'ts for pitch sites that you stick to or have heard other people say?

I prefer grass if possible. What I hate is when you find a nice patch and its either not level, or it has dents and holes all over the place. The best grass I can think of was when I camped at Hawes, Bainbridge Farm I think its called. The owner, about 4 years ago now, kept the camping area as smooth as a billiad table.

I've also managed to camp on top of an old wooden door, it was just lying there on a mound of rubble so I 'borrowed' it for the night. I've often noticed that the grass under electricity pylons is usually of good or reasonable quality. I even managed to find a large boulder once which was smooth and flat and slept on that and sometimes I've had the good fortune to come across wooden floor farm trailers and slept on them as well.

^^Just bought one of the above to flatten out any bumps on rocky ground etc - might be useful over colder camps as well

I am just grateful if I can find a spot free of tussocks!

I did once hunker down in a pile of roadside grit. That was surprisingly comfortable.

I once spent a night or rather part of a night on Assention island. It was warm so no need for sleeping bags. We just crashed out on the volcanic pumice, it was amazingly comfortable. You just sank into it and it molded itself around your body. Mind you we had just spent 30 hours in the back of a Hercules puke machine.

Short heather can be wonderfully comfortable if you can find it - and dry.

Something like this:

Spent last night here; a wonderful soft heathery mattress. And the smell.... ^-^

Not a place for vertigo sufferers though - or for those prone to sleepwalking!

Yep, that and Mountain Thyme which is amazingly pungent but also brilliant at getting you off to sleep  :D

I've realised that this low green mat forming plant is Crowberry, not a type of heather.

Crowberry gets my vote as the most comfortable surface to wild camp on.
