Colne Valley Path | Essex (With Video)
« on: 17:05:58, 13/06/19 »
The Colne Valley Path is a 23 mile long distance trail starting at Great Yeldham in Essex and ending at the Roman City of Colchester. To enjoy the route the most I split it up into 3 short parts and used public transport to complete linear walks.

Guided Walk Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP1ch-_13ck

Distance: 23 Miles
Ascent: 309m
Total Time: 11 Hours

Part 1 Full Report: http://www.lakedistrict-walks.co.uk/2019/January/02.01.2019_Colne_Valley_Path_Day_1.html
Part 2 Full Report: http://www.lakedistrict-walks.co.uk/2019/January/08.01.2019_Colne_Valley_Path_Day_2.html

The Great Oak marking the start of the walk.

The route is fairly well waymarked.

Countryside around Great Yeldham.

Castle Hedingham Church.

Hedingham Castle Norman Keep.

Traces of the old railway line.

Halstead marked the end of the first part.

Following the riverbank path in Halstead.

More traces of the old railway.

Colne Engaine church.

After seeing so many traces of the railway the route finally joins it for a short way!

Approaching Chappel and Wakes Colne.

Chappel's Chapel or Church? This also marks the end of the second part of the walk.

Approaching Chappel Viaduct.

One of the larges structures in the country made out of brick.

The River Colne.

Increasingly better views as the valley sides increase in height.

Entering Colchester - there's a lot of History in this town...

Like the Balkerne Gate - the largest remaining roman gatehouse in the country!

Colchester Norman Castle - made from recycled Roman materials and on the site of a unique Roman Temple.

And St Botolphs Priory, also made from recycled Roman materials.

Superb shot through the Chappel viaduct pillars.

So many paths, so little time

Agreed.  Smashing "arty-farty" shot through the viaduct's "legs".

It looks and sounds like a really lovely walk.  Thanks for posting  O0

Great photos, and I found your youtube video very interesting. The overhead footage gives a great glimpse of the surrounding terrain, perhaps a chance to compare available quality of way with allowed way.

Great stuff. O0
