I suggest that if you have kids you enrol them in a local Scout Group.   That's where I learned map reading and navigation and the skills I acquired put me in good stead for later years.  I can honestly say that I wouldn't have done the foreign treks, UK LDPs and even day walks without those skills, and it hardly cost a penny.
