Eagle and Shanlieve: wonderful western Mournes
« on: 20:43:57, 15/12/19 »
With cloud engulfing the higher Mournes in the east I drove westwards in the hope of getting some views from the western Mournes. I wasn't disappointed. Starting from Leitrim Lodge, I walked around Rocky mountain before traversing marshy terrain to the windy gap. Following the wall, I gained the summit of Eagle 35 minutes after leaving windy gap. I split the Mournes into four regions: west, south, central and east. From Eagle it is possible to see all four regions. Not many mountains in the range can claim this distinction. Completing a circular walk, I made the short traverse to Shanlieve before picking up the track back to Leitrim. Total distance was just over 11km.
