Another vote for liner gloves, they make a big difference as you don't take them off at all. You can certainly eat your sandwiches in them and you can probably smoke in them, though I admit I've never tried. I find sheepskin mitts really good, take a spare pair on a wet day. I remember my father had sheepskin gloves, which might be worth a try, if you prefer gloves. Keeping yourself warm generally is important, I always carry extra insulation (in my case a Paramo gilet) and put it on as soon as I stop moving and don't take it off until I am really toasty
